The Power Of Fun In Children’s Language Learning

As a South Korean, I am pleasantly surprised when I hear some of my friends speaking fluent Korean out of Korea. A decade ago, there were not many people learning Korean, but the popularity of the language soared with the rise of K-pop and K-drama. I had a similar experience when it came to acquiring a new language. During high school, I was captivated by a Japanese drama, and watched it repeatedly. It made me much more familiar with Japanese, improving my language proficiency significantly.

These experiences illustrate the crucial role of entertainment in language acquisition. If people are exposed to a new language through a means of entertainment — songs, games, dramas, or movies — they are likely to be more motivated to learn compared to encountering the language solely in academic settings. The reason is simple: Because it’s fun! Human beings are born to feel more inclined toward things they truly enjoy. The old proverb holds true: “Those who work hard cannot beat those who enjoy.”

Let your kids dive into the “fun” of language learning

This tendency becomes more conspicuous for kids. Children only indulge in subjects that genuinely interest them. They are more responsive to visually appealing content than adults. A glimpse of animation will be more effective at grabbing the attention of children than a wordy lecture about the benefits of learning languages.
