Torn Between Worlds - Regina’s Story
In a world where borders seem to define our lives, there are stories that transcend boundaries and inspire us to embrace a more open-minded and global perspective. The tale of my parents, who embarked on a remarkable journey across borders with nothing but a backpack and a dream, is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the enduring human spirit. Their story has shaped our family's trajectory for generations to come, and instilled in me a profound sense of international pride, an insatiable curiosity about the world, and a commitment to being a global citizen.
From Romania to Hungary
My name is Regina, and I am a 20-year old who holds double nationality with Hungary and Romania.
Before I was born, my parents moved from Romania to Hungary. At a young age, they made the brave decision to leave behind their homeland and venture into unknown territory. Armed with only a backpack of essentials and a heart full of hope, they embarked on a journey that would forever change their lives.
Starting over in a new country is never easy, and arriving in Hungary my parents faced a myriad of challenges. Building a new life from scratch means finding work, a place to live, forming new friendships and social circles, being mindful of legal documentation, all while overcoming cultural and language differences. With unwavering determination, sheer hard work, and I’m sure a bit of sweat on their brows from time to time, they gradually laid the foundation for a new beginning. Their story of resilience teaches that obstacles are not roadblocks but opportunities for growth, and that with dedication and perseverance, we can overcome any adversity.
In due time, my parents decided to start their own family, and I was born a Hungarian with Romanian ancestry.
Growing Up And Never Feeling Quite At Home
Our family became split, as we were the only three living in Hungary while the rest of my extended family were back in Romania. This brought with it many emotional highs and lows.
We frequently traveled back to Romania, and I spent my summers forging a close relationship with my Grandma. Growing up in a household shaped by my parents' remarkable journey, it's no surprise that their spirit of adventure and openness to different cultures influenced how I perceive the world. I was raised with an open mindset about making new friends from different cultures and places. I learned to speak Romanian not in school, but through socializing with friends during the long hot days of summer. It was a fascinating period of life, and I eagerly awaited each summer break!
But as time went on we visited Romania less and less. My childhood summer friends started to fade, we grew apart, and when I visited again it didn't quite feel the same - I struggled to feel 'at home' in Romania. As an adolescent on my own journey of self-discovery, I experienced conflicting feelings about who I was nationally: the emerging feeling that I didn't quite belong in Romania, nor did I feel quite at home in Hungary, left me confused. I felt torn between two worlds, and there was always some element of friendship or family missing on either side.
Finding Comfort In Travel
Through teenage years of self-discovery, I continued to lean into what I knew - my international background. This passion for adventure brought me to different corners of the European continent, from Turkey to Finland, and in between. In moments of doubt, or struggle, I would think back to my parents’ story of starting anew. They serve as my northstar, and I am proud and grateful to call them my parents. Their story ignites in me a passion for knowledge, a thirst for understanding diverse perspectives, and a yearning to connect with people from all corners of the globe - despite the challenges sometimes associated with this endeavour. In due time, I have begun to feel that the world is my home, and doesn’t have to be limited to the borders of just Hungary, or just Romania.
International families serve as living examples of the richness that cultural diversity brings to our lives. They blend traditions, languages, and customs, creating a melting pot of experiences that enrich the lives of everyone involved. From celebrating various festivals to learning different languages, international families foster an environment of curiosity and openness, teaching their children the value of respecting and appreciating different cultures.
While growing up I had moments where I did not fully understand or appreciate this global perspective my parents were instilling in me; but today, I recognize how wonderfully beautiful this perspective is - and I wouldn’t change a single thing about my childhood!
An Inspiring Outlook For Future Generations
My parents' story isn't just one of personal triumph; it's a testament to the potential we all have to become global citizens, and the transformative power of embracing a global perspective. Their willingness to embrace change, learn from others, and contribute positively to their new community exemplifies the ideals of global citizenship. Their journey serves as a reminder that our shared humanity transcends borders, and by being open to new experiences and ideas, we can forge meaningful connections that enrich our lives and impact future generations.
I will continue to carry their legacy forward, may our family serve as a shining example of how embracing diversity, seeking knowledge, and fostering connections can lead to a more interconnected and harmonious world.
Moving abroad can be challenging for children. While we are introduced to a world of new friends, moving back and forth can make it hard to establish deep long lasting friendships that endure the test of time. Modern solutions help to make staying in touch with international friends more accessible. I hope that this generation of dual nationality children can form more long lasting friendships, and in doing so, minimize the challenges associated with an international childhood, and profit from the benefits. Many parents are already exploring and finding creative and innovative ways to better introduce the world to their kids, like Olivia!
As a kid I was exposed to multiple languages, traditions, and ways of life, so I became a global citizen from an early age. My parents taught me to see beyond borders, embrace diversity, and appreciate the interconnectedness of the global community. In doing so, I have learned valuable lessons about love, understanding, and global citizenship.
